TICKETSMile Hi Church, Lakewood, CO
Forty-four years ago, Minister Fred Vogt is said to have told the architect designing a new building for his burgeoning congregation that he wanted something so unique it would draw expletives from surprised drivers.
Members say the eclectic nature of the building fits well under their denomination as a Center of Spiritual Living and New Thought Church, which promotes inclusiveness.
“It’s the largest New Thought Church in the world and the last one the founding father of the Religious Science Movement personally signed off on,” said Joy Falloni, a member of the church’s history team.
Starting with 17 people meeting in a West Colfax vacuum store in 1959, Mile Hi Church now claims roughly 20,000 members worldwide. Increased yearly use meant another sanctuary had to be built to complement the original church.
A 232-foot dome was built in 2008 behind the original church by essentially coating a giant air-filled balloon with concrete.
Roughly 2,200 people from across the Front Range attend three Sunday services in the new building, which houses a cavernous sanctuary and has won several architecture and sustainability awards.
Mile Hi Church’s flagship building still sees heavy use hosting Wednesday evening services and youth classrooms. Throughout the year, Easter and Christmas are celebrated, but so are seasonal solstices and holidays from a cross section of religions.
Location
The church is located on the northeast corner of West Alameda Avenue and Garrison Street.
